🎨 How to color it

Color the pumpkin topper burnt orange, the frosting caramel cream, the wrapper deep teal, and the scattered leaves in maple red, golden yellow, and oak brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the thin frosting curves and tiny acorns, then switch to broader strokes for the pumpkin ribs and wrapper panels. Try hiding one unexpected purple leaf among the front leaf cluster, as if autumn played a quiet joke.

Under the harvest hall rafters, Sable practiced her announcement in a voice no louder than cinnamon dust. “Pumpkin at noon,” she squeaked to a wheat stalk, then ducked behind her frosting swirl. The hall smelled like toasted oats and cold apples, and paper leaves clicked softly against the windows.

She rolled nearer the tasting table, wrapper pleats crinkling: crick, crack, crick. Sable wanted to tell everyone her pumpkin topper was ready for the first slice of autumn, but the words kept sliding back under her frosting. While she fussed with a maple leaf on her wrapper, an acorn printed near the bottom popped open like a tiny door.

Inside was a note in nut-brown ink: SAY IT TO THE ACORNS FIRST. Sable blinked. The acorns around the hall were not decorations at all; they were listening cups for the shy. She leaned close and whispered, “Pumpkin at noon!” Every acorn answered with a polite little bonk.

By the time the bakers arrived, Sable’s voice had climbed from whisper to giggle. “Pumpkin at noon!” she called, and the wheat stalk bowed. Next time you spot the acorns near her wrapper, dare them to bonk back.
