🎨 How to color it

Color the puppy golden tan, his bandana sea-glass blue, the sandcastle sandy beige, and the spiral shell soft coral. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny paw print on the bandana, the castle bricks, and the little foam circles near his nose. Try making the ocean lines fade from turquoise to deep blue so the puppy’s warm fur pops against the cool shore.

At low tide, when the wet sand shone like gray glass, Baxter nudged a plain spiral shell toward his blanket. He wanted to keep it for the long ride home because, when he pressed his ear close, it held a tiny shhh like a secret wave. But the royal sandcastle by the tide line was cracking, and three sandpipers hopped around it, peeping in a panic as the water crept nearer with a salty fizz.

Baxter set one paw over the shell. Nobody would know if he kept it. Then a bubble popped on his nose, and from inside the shell came a whisper: “Give me where the quiet is needed.” Baxter carried it to the castle moat and tipped it into the foamy water. The beach went still for one breath—no gull cry, no splash, only silver light.

The next wave reached the castle and curled gently around it instead of knocking it down. From that day on, every shell kept a bit of Baxter’s borrowed hush, so anyone who listens can hear the sea being careful. If you spot the spiral shell near his paws, keep the secret: it is still holding that low-tide shhh.
