Every morning, before the fence shadows reached his hutch, Quill nudged his speckled bowl into one exact spot beside the hay bundle. It looked like an ordinary bowl of pellets, carrot tops, and crunchy bits, but Quill knew the tiny chip on its rim pointed to a message scratched underneath by old Aunt Sprocket: WAIT FOR THE RIGHT NOSE.
Until one day, a gust flipped the bowl with a clonk. Because of that, three sparrows swooped down and tap-tap-tapped every pea across the grass. Because of that, Barnaby the cat poked his whiskers through the daisies and announced, “I am clearly the right nose.” Quill sat still, ears tall, while Barnaby sniffed the empty bowl and sneezed into the fence.
At last, when the yard smelled warm and grassy, a beetle bumped the chipped rim and turned the bowl over again. Underneath, the scratched words read: PATIENCE GETS THE CARROT. A carrot had been hidden in the hay all along. If you check the bowl and the hay bundle now, can you guess where Quill looked first before crunching his reward?
