🎨 How to color it

Color the shark slate blue-gray, the tall seagrass olive green, the sandy bottom pale tan, and the tiny fish sunny yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the thin grass blades and root lines, then switch to smoother side-strokes on the shark’s long body. Try a soft turquoise fade in the open water so the dark gray shark looks like it is slipping through a cool, quiet channel.

The story behind this coloring page

Between the tall roots of Root Meadow, Pippa tucked a strip of seagrass under one fin and hummed through her nose. She had given herself a challenge: weave a parade ribbon without biting the ends ragged. The grass smelled peppery and green, and every time she looped it, it tickled her gills. “No teeth,” she whispered, which was hard for a shark and very funny to say.

She twisted, tucked, and smoothed the ribbon along a sandy ridge. Tiny fish drifted closer, their tails making little zip-zip sounds. Pippa added three wavy tassels, then backed up to admire her work. It looked almost grand. It also looked almost like sea spaghetti.

Then the ribbon lifted by itself. Not magic—fish! They had slipped beneath the loops and were wearing the whole thing like a long, wiggly cape. Pippa snorted a bubble so big it bumped her nose. The parade began at once, with Pippa gliding proudly beside her fin-made ribbon and the fish swishing through the roots. If you spot the tallest grass, you may catch the cape still going zip-zip through Root Meadow.
