🎨 How to color it

Color the great white shark with slate gray on top and pearl white below, make the sailboat hull cherry red, and shade the sails sunny cream against teal waves. Use sharp colored pencils for the thin water streaks under the boat, then switch to broader strokes for the shark’s long body and the open bands of current. Try a darker blue swirl around the shark’s tail and a pale aqua glow beneath the boat to show the two paths nearly crossing.

Every day, Nessa shot through the open channel before breakfast, counting three cold currents with her nose: salt, kelp, and the sharp fizz of faraway rocks. She wanted to make the whole run without turning back, from the green reef mouth to the silver buoy. Her fins tingled in the rushing water, and she loved the slap-slap sound of waves above her.

Until one day, a strange shadow skidded over the sea. Wood creaked. Cloth snapped. A skinny underwater blade swung close to her dorsal fin, and Nessa froze so hard bubbles bumped her chin. Inside the noise came a smaller sound: tap-tap-tap, like a trapped crab. Because of that, she followed the shadow instead of the current. Because of THAT, she saw the sailboat sliding straight toward the hidden rocks, where white foam chewed the stones.

Nessa’s stomach squeezed, but she flicked her tail once, then harder. “This way!” she barked into the water, though the sky-boat could not speak shark. She rushed across its path, again and again, making splashes slap its wooden side until the rudder swung. At last the boat turned toward deep water, and Nessa finished her run beside it, counting salt, kelp, and the sharp fizz of faraway rocks—can you spot the moment she dared to cross under the sky-boat?
