🎨 How to color it

Color the sawshark slate gray on top with a pale cream belly, make the scallop shells soft peach and ivory, and use olive green for the sea grass clumps. The tiny tooth edges, scale marks, and shell ridges will look best with sharp colored pencils, working slowly from the snout outward. Try a faint blue-green wash behind the shark so the long saw-shaped snout stands out against the sandy bottom.

The story behind this coloring page

Kesto’s Sneaky Snout Surprise — Every day, before the tide bells clinked in the eelgrass, Kesto swept the shell flats with his long snout. Read the full story →

Every day, before the tide bells clinked in the eelgrass, Kesto swept the shell flats with his long snout. Tick-tick went the little teeth over pebbles, swish-swish went his whiskers through cool sand, and the scallops popped open just enough to sneeze bubbles at him. Kesto loved that job. He fit there: nose low, fins steady, grin full of sea-salt mischief.

Until one day, the flats went quiet. No tick-tick. No bubble sneezes. Even the crab twins stopped arguing and whispered, “Your snout is humming.” Because of that, Kesto wiggled his whiskers so hard he stirred up a sandy cloud. Because of that, a tiny brass kazoo shot out from behind his left whisker and tooted, “Brrrap!”

Kesto laughed so many bubbles that three shells rolled over. The crab twins admitted they had hidden the kazoo there during his nap, but the tune made every scallop pop in perfect rhythm. At last Kesto swept the flats again, now leading the silliest parade under the tide bells. Next time you spot his low snout among the shells, listen for the tick-tick and the secret brrrap.
