🎨 How to color it

Color the kitten soft silver-gray with charcoal stripes, the birdhouse warm cedar brown, the leaves fresh green, and the berries a bright cherry red. Use sharp colored pencils for the kitten’s thin fur marks and the birdhouse wood grain, then switch to broader strokes on the thick tree branches. Try a pale morning-blue wash behind the leaves so the round birdhouse door and the kitten’s bright eyes stand out.

Each evening, when the cedar grove smelled of sap and cool bark, Tibble balanced on the lowest limb and tried his little challenge: count one whole minute without twitching his whiskers. He never made it past twenty-three. Beetles clicked. Leaves brushed his ears. His own tail made a soft thump-thump behind him.

One evening, the grove went quiet before he began. Because of that, Tibble crept higher, paw pads pressing the rough branch. Because of that, he heard a tiny tap inside the old birdhouse, not a birdcall, but wood answering wood. “I’m listening,” he whispered. A breeze slid through the leaves, and the tap came again, steady as a hidden clock.

At last Tibble tucked his paws beneath him beside the birdhouse and counted sixty heartbeats while the whole tree seemed to breathe around him. If you follow his lifted tail to the little round door, can you hear the cedar grove counting too, thump-thump, just like the opening bark?
