Every day, Veyra crossed the basin counting ridges before the heat shimmer swallowed them, tapping each number with her tail in the dust. One day she challenged herself to find the ridge that made no shadow; it quivered, split, and began to walk. Because of that, she pushed past the bitter fern beds, stones clacking underfoot; because of that, the whole herd lifted their long necks toward a gap smelling of rain. At last Veyra understood: the horizon had been leading them to water, and her tail beat out the count again in the dust.
