The little shelf by Nico’s bed needed one soft leaf, the kind that smelled like rain and shade. He buckled his yellow helmet, rolled his basket bike away from the porch, and followed the park loop where pebbles clicked under his tires.
Under the biggest tree, he reached for a leaf, but a tiny voice sighed, “Please don’t take my roof.” A snail sat beneath it, silver trail shining in the warm light. Nico’s basket was empty, and his knees were dusty from stopping so fast. He tucked a fallen leaf beside the snail instead.
On the ride home, the basket carried something better: the hush of the tree, the click-click path, and the feeling that the park had made room for him. Next time you see Nico’s smile, can you tell which shady tree welcomed him back?
