Under the warm baseboard, Quill kept a smooth pebble bowl beside his bed. He wanted one soft crumb to fill it before the night pipes began their clank-clank song. The kitchen smelled of soap, orange peel, and yesterday’s toast, and the open tiles shone like pale squares of moon. Quill stepped out, antennae brushing the cool air, and crossed toward a lump by the cabinet.
Halfway there, a sticky splash caught his foot. Tug, tug, tug—his pebble bowl slipped from his back and rolled into a thin crack between two tiles. Quill’s chest went hollow. “Oh, please not there,” he whispered. He squeezed one feeler into the crack and felt not emptiness, but paper, crumbs, and something folded soft as a moth wing.
With a dusty heave, Quill lifted the loose tile. Hidden underneath lay a whole hush of forgotten crumbs, enough to fill bowls for every beetle, silverfish, and sleepy gnat behind the wall. Quill carried back the first golden piece, then waved so hard his sore foot stopped aching. Next time you see that big kitchen crumb, can you tell who heard Quill calling from the warm baseboard?
