Behind the poppy patch, a rainbow sat without a single shine-sound. Lumi tapped one red band with her tiny foot. Tap, tap. Nothing. She wanted to peek inside, but the arch was taller than a tree and smelled like wet grass and thunder.
“Just one look,” Lumi whispered. She fluttered to the middle, where nobody ever checked. There, tucked under the green stripe, was a sleepy packet of colors, warm as toast. Lumi held it close. Puff! The colors jumped onto her wings in bands, stars, dots, and curls.
Ever since then, butterflies keep little rainbows on their wings, in case the sky forgets where it put one. Look near Lumi’s wings—you can almost spot the secret packet’s sparkle.
