🎨 How to color it

Color the butterfly’s patterned wings tangerine and violet, the caterpillar apple green, the big leaf deep emerald, and the smiling flower sunny yellow. Use chunky crayons or markers for the large leaf sections and flower petals, then try a sharper crayon point for the butterfly’s circles and wing stripes. Add a pale blue sky around the clouds, but leave the tiny stars bright white so they look like secret sparkles.

Under the big bean leaf, Kiko pressed his belly to the smooth green rib and whispered, “One slide to the flower, no bumps.” The leaf smelled rainy and sweet. Scritch, scritch went his tiny feet as he scooted up, but the garden grew strangely dim. Even the daisy shut one petal, as if hiding a secret.

A butterfly drifted down with soft flap-flap wings. “The flower won’t open unless it sees where you belong,” she said. Kiko looked at the leaf, the flower, and the curving trail between them. He rubbed the leaf’s dew into three little shines and tapped them onto the butterfly’s wings. Ping, ping, ping! The daisy opened, warm as noon. Ever since, butterflies keep tiny stars on their wings to show every caterpillar the way home. Look near the butterfly’s wings again — you can almost hear ping, ping, ping.
