Every day, Eddie carried packages from the van to the garden gate, and every day he made a tiny dare: three steps, big smile, no peeking at the labels. The star box was his favorite because it smelled like peppermint tape and made a soft shuff-shuff against his shirt. Until one day, the star box sneezed. “Achoo!” it squeaked, and Eddie’s cap nearly jumped off his head.
Because of that, the boxes on the van wobbled like pudding. Because of THAT, the daisies beside the curb began bobbing as if they were laughing at him. Eddie wanted to set the box down, but he took one brave step, then another, while the package hiccuped, “Hup!” At the gate, a tiny wind-up kitten popped out for the toy shop next door, chasing its own ribbon tail. Eddie laughed so hard he forgot to be nervous. Next time you spot the star on Eddie’s box, listen closely for one last hup.
