🎨 How to color it

Color the frog spring green, the lily pads deep emerald, and the open water lily soft pink with a golden center. Use broad crayon strokes for the frog’s round belly and lily pads, then switch to a sharper pencil for the flower’s skinny stamens and leaf veins. Try making the ripple rings pale blue, with a slightly darker blue closest to the frog’s toes.

Every morning, Quinn tapped one toe on his lily pad and dared himself to hop across three ripple rings before the dragonflies buzzed past. Plip, plip, plip—he could do it if the rings stayed small and still.

Until one windy morning, the big water lily spun like a pink boat and made the rings wobble wide. Because of that, Quinn landed with one foot in cold water; because of that, a silver minnow giggled bubbles under his chin. “One more,” Quinn croaked, though his knees felt fizzy. He pushed off, sailed over the widest ring, and landed beside the flower with a splat. Next time you spot his smile, see if you can count the rings he crossed: plip, plip, plip.
