Every morning, Saskia tapped the camellia branch three times: big bloom, small bud, shiny leaf. That was how the greenhouse knew where the sun would land first. The glass roof clicked with heat, and the air smelled like wet bark and peppery soil.
Then Saskia invented Bud-Swap, a game where she whispered, “Pretend you’re the leader,” to the roundest bud and “Act sleepy,” to the open flower. Because of that, the bees queued at the bud, buzzing like tiny engines. Because of THAT, the watering cart stopped under the wrong leaves, and the ferns got a splashy surprise on their ankles.
At last Saskia climbed to the fork of the branch and called, “Reset round!” The big camellia shook out its petals, the bud tucked its grin back in, and every leaf flashed its proper green. Saskia belonged right there in the damp, bright trouble she had made—can you spot the shy bud that almost fooled the bees after those three taps?
