🎨 How to color it

Color the pumpkin a creamy orange, the daisy petals golden yellow with russet centers, the corn kernels buttery yellow, and the hanging leaves maple red. Use sharp colored pencils for the corn’s tiny kernels and the basket weave, then switch to broader strokes for the pumpkin’s smooth panels. Try a secret autumn palette by making one daisy pale moon-blue, as if it bloomed after the garland lights went out.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Daisies Face the Feast — Under the harvest pantry shelf, Calder pressed his ear to the cool floorboards and listened: tick-tick, rustle, tick. Read the full story →

Under the harvest pantry shelf, Calder pressed his ear to the cool floorboards and listened: tick-tick, rustle, tick. He needed one brave corn kernel for the lantern game before the older runners woke, but the basket above him looked as high as a hill. It smelled of dry husks, apple skins, and the dusty sweetness of pumpkins. Then a voice, thin as a spider thread, whispered from the shadows, “Not that kernel. The listening one.”

Calder climbed a curled vine, knees knocking against the wicker. At the top, daisies crowded around the pumpkin like pale little suns, all staring away from him. In the middle daisy, a hidden ring of seeds clicked softly. “We count the feast,” it said. “But we cannot see what is gathered unless someone turns us.” Calder’s fingers trembled. He wanted to scramble down, yet he nudged the stem once. The whole bunch swiveled toward the basket with a hush like pages turning.

The seed-ring chimed, and one corn kernel loosened into Calder’s palm, warm as if it had saved summer. From that night on, daisies at harvest have faced the fullest basket first, keeping count for shy climbers and secret suppers. If you spot the daisy nearest the pumpkin, can you guess which one first heard Calder’s tick-tick, rustle, tick?
