🎨 How to color it

Color her curls honey brown, the dotted headband sky blue, the heart charms rosy pink, and the corner leaves fresh green. Use a sharp crayon or colored pencil for the tiny headband dots and heart edges, then switch to broader strokes for the big curls and shirt. Try making every other curl a slightly darker brown so her hair looks extra bouncy around the blue band.

Behind the garden gate, where leaves rubbed together with a hush-hush sound, Junie made herself a private challenge: she would count every curl on her head before the afternoon star appeared. One curl bounced. Two curls twisted. Then the wind tickled her nose with the green smell of ivy, and the curls slipped right over her eyes. “Stay where I put you,” Junie whispered, as if hair could keep a secret.

She found a ribbon in her pocket, dotted it with blackberry juice, and tied on three little paper hearts so it would feel important. The moment she pushed it over her curls, the hearts gave a tiny pat-pat-pat, and every curl tucked back to listen. Junie could count again, and so could every curious child after her. That is why heart headbands have held back runaway curls ever since—if you peek at Junie now, can you spot the three hearts keeping the secret?
