🎨 How to color it

Color the horse chestnut brown, the raincoat sunny yellow with sky-blue clouds and red umbrellas, and the puddles a soft silvery blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the small umbrella shapes on the coat, then switch to broader strokes for the clouds and open puddles. Try making each falling raindrop a little darker at the bottom, so the whole shower feels secret and sparkly.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Raincoats Keep Umbrellas — All morning, the reed path went slap, slop, hush under Calloway’s hooves as he tested each puddle for the school mice. Read the full story →

All morning, the reed path went slap, slop, hush under Calloway’s hooves as he tested each puddle for the school mice. He wanted the little carts to cross before dusk, but the rain kept stitching new water over every hoofprint. The air smelled of wet grass and pond mud. Then a voice squeaked from inside a raindrop, “Please don’t step there!”

Calloway froze with one hoof raised. Beneath him, a tiny rain-mender in a thistle hat was trying to patch a leak in the sky’s hem. Her needle was bent, and her thread was made of cloud. Calloway could have hurried on; no one waited in the reeds to clap for him. Instead, he lowered his neck and let her snip the little dry shapes from the inside of his plain coat: a cloud, a splash, an umbrella, another umbrella.

The mender sewed them into the shower. Plink! The rain softened, the puddles stopped growing, and the mouse carts rolled through with barely a squeak. Ever since, raincoats keep clouds and umbrellas on them, in memory of the horse who gave his dry pieces away while nobody watched. Next time you see those umbrella shapes, can you spot the secret he spared from the slap, slop, hush?
