🎨 How to color it

Color the patrol horse chestnut brown, the officer’s uniform navy blue with a gold badge, and the park trees bright green beside a pale gray city skyline. Use sharp colored pencils for the bridle straps, saddle badge, uniform pockets, and small fence posts, then switch to broader strokes for the horse’s body and leafy tree crowns. Try a sunrise-to-sky-blue gradient behind the skyline so the waving officer and patrol blanket stand out warmly.

Under the sycamores, with bus brakes sighing beyond the fence, Arden carried a dull tin star tucked beneath his patrol blanket. He wanted every child by the park path to hear what he heard: the tiny clink-clink song hidden in the city’s ordinary morning. His obstacle was Officer Dale’s rule—steady hooves, quiet reins, no stopping unless someone needed help.

Then the noon bell stuck. It gave one cracked bong and quit. Pigeons burst up like tossed pepper, babies frowned, and even the lamppost seemed to hold its breath. Arden nudged the tin star against the saddle ring. Clink-clink! The sound bounced off the badge on the blanket, then the bridle, then the officer’s radio. Officer Dale blinked. “You hear that too?”

Arden lifted one front hoof high, and the whole park answered—fence rails tapping, leaves shivering, the far buildings humming silver in the sun. Joy that big could not stay under a blanket. Officer Dale raised his hand, and from that day on, mounted patrols waved first so the city would remember to listen; next time you spot that raised hand, see if you can catch Arden’s clink-clink too.
