🎨 How to color it

Color the worker’s uniform bright safety orange, the recycling truck fresh green, the curbside bin deep blue, and the bottles soft teal and clear gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the small labels, wheel rings, and recycling symbols, then switch to markers for the truck panels and sidewalk slabs. Try adding a pale yellow glow around the lamppost and a few golden leaves in the tree to make this pickup morning feel a little magical.

Before the truck’s brakes sighed at Maple Finch Lane, Calder checked the pouch on his belt for one blue bottle cap. He needed it for the tiny wind chime he was building at the depot, the one he hoped would make everyone laugh at lunch. The street smelled like cut grass and rain-wet cardboard. When the cap wasn’t in the first bin, he stepped past his usual curb and followed a faint ting-ting from a lumpy bag.

Inside, cans winked, paper crackled, and one glass bottle hummed against his glove. “Not trash,” whispered a voice as small as a bubble. Calder nearly dropped the bag. The bottle rolled toward the storm drain, showing a blue cap stamped with a star and three arrows. He paid for the chase with one muddy sock, but he caught it before it slipped away.

Back at the truck, Calder screwed the cap onto his chime string. The bottle’s hum joined the clinks, bright as bells, and every porch door opened. Joy bounced from house to house until even the sleepy lamppost seemed to listen. Next time you spot the bag by Calder’s shoes, can you find the cap that made Maple Finch Lane sing?
