Under the hush-hush roof of the winter gift hall, Luma pressed her nose to every ribbon knot, sniffing cedar, paper, and peppermint. She wanted to know why the star on the tallest tree glowed only at night, but the old owls in the rafters just blinked and said, “Some questions have warm hooves.” That made Luma’s curiosity trot faster.
A tiny wooden train sat beside the wrapped boxes, too small for any elf and too plain to be a present. When Luma nudged its chimney, it clicked. Out rolled a silver moonseed, cool as snowmelt and humming like a sleepy bee. “There you are,” whispered the tree.
Luma carried the moonseed up in her antlers and touched it to the star. Gold light spilled over the ornaments, the candy canes, and her bell, soft as a blanket. Ever since, tree stars keep one moonseed tucked inside, waiting for a curious reindeer to wake them; next time you spot Luma’s lifted nose, can you guess where the glow began?
