All morning, Nola carried her little watering can along the border garden, listening to the plink-plink inside. One drop rolled at the bottom, too small to pour, but she kept it safe because it had fallen on her birthday leaf. The soil smelled warm, and the daisies held their faces still, as if waiting with her.
She tipped the can a little, then a little more. Splashlets danced out, pat-pat-pat, but the tiny drop stayed tucked in the spout. “Not yet?” Nola whispered. Above her, a round cloud smiled without hurrying.
Then the closed tulip gave the softest bell sound. Ting. The tiny drop slipped free and landed right in its cup. At once the cloud answered with a silver sprinkle, and every flower nodded. Next time you see the little drop near Nola’s spout, listen for the tulip’s quiet ting.
