Every day, Vera lined the pantry jars by smell: cinnamon high, pickles low, strawberry jam in the sunny middle where the glass warmed her palms. She liked the small click each jar made when it belonged. But one day a new jar arrived with no name at all, only a blank label and a bow tied tight around its cloth cap.
Because of that, Vera could not place it. Because of THAT, the whole shelf seemed to hold its breath; even the plant by the window smelled greener, as if waiting. She turned the jar, listened to the soft glug inside, and found, under the loose corner of the label, a smaller label hidden where nobody thought to look. It read: FOR THE TABLE WHERE EVERYONE SITS.
So Vera carried it past every tidy shelf and set it on the counter among the strawberries and leaves. “Here,” she whispered, and the jar clicked without moving. Next time you see its wide blank label, can you imagine the little answer tucked underneath, still warm from the sunny middle?
