By the bakery vent, with warm cinnamon air puffing over the sidewalk, Dax taped three bottle caps to a cereal-box scoreboard. He had just invented Wobble Dash, a game with one rule: slide past the cone, tap the crack shaped like lightning, and shout your best hero sound. His cape was a towel with two careful knots, and he had drawn the question mark on his shirt himself. “Behold my extremely official course!” he announced to a parking meter.
The first run went whoosh-squeak-hop. Dax’s sneaker kissed a puddle, his cape snapped like laundry in wind, and his fingers stretched toward the orange cone. He felt the proud tickle of glue on his thumb and marker ink on his wrist. The whole city block seemed to hold its breath—windows shining, bike waiting, streetlamp leaning in.
Then a pigeon landed on the scoreboard and pecked the bottle caps: clack, clack, clack. Two more pigeons waddled over and gave him a perfect row of crumbs, which apparently meant nine points and “needs more wobble.” Dax bowed so low his mask almost slipped. Next time you spot the cone, see if you can find where the judges made the warm cinnamon air puff over the sidewalk.
