Every evening, Felix spread his trail cloth in the mountain meadow and traced routes with his father’s brass compass, racing the sun as pine sap warmed the air. Until one windy day, the compass needle spun and spun over a blank bend in the map. Because of that, Felix followed the old creek instead, boots thumping, heart snapping like a flag. Because of that, he reached a fallen fir where the path vanished under needles and dusk-blue shadow.
He almost shoved the compass back in his pocket, but the tiny case felt hot from his hand. “Wait,” hooted Strix from the branches, and the word fell softer than feathers. Felix held still. The needle trembled, slowed, and pointed not north, but toward three pale stones shining beside the stump. Under them lay the missing trail marker, carved with his father’s initials. At last Felix set it upright, and the meadow wind quieted around the brass compass that waited.
