Behind the tall lockers, Rory tucked both paws around his backpack straps and listened for the first bell’s clank. He only wanted one crisp bite of the green apple in his lap before class, the kind that snapped loud enough to make whiskers twitch. Then cubby nine went tap-tap, tap. Not a mouse tap. A pencil tap.
Rory slid off his stool, leaving one warm paw print on the seat, and crept past the water bottle and lunchbox. “Who’s in there?” he whispered. A paper corner poked from behind a leaning book. To reach it, he set down his apple, and it rolled—bump, bump—straight into the darkest cubby. Out popped a beetle wearing a thread like a sash, pushing the apple back with all six feet.
The note smelled like dusty wood and grape eraser: MEET ME WHERE THE FLOOR TILE POINTS NORTH. Rory forgot his bite completely. He tucked the clue under his bow tie and grinned at the beetle, who gave one important tap. Look back at the cubbies—cubby nine might still be keeping the next secret, right behind the tall lockers.
