Under the sunlit coral plain, Rook zipped between tall ribbons of seaweed, chasing a trail of bubbles that popped like tiny drumbeats. He wanted to reach the place where the fizz began before the current changed. Past knobbed coral and smooth shells, he swooped low, his tentacles streaming like party ribbons. “Faster!” he called, and a school of little striped fish darted after him, flashing silver in the green-gold light.
The bubble road grew wider. It curled around a starfish, skipped over anemones, and rose in sparkling loops beside the rocks. Rook spun through it, laughing so hard his bell wobbled. Then he noticed the bubbles were not rising from a cave or crack at all. Each time the little fish flicked their tails together—swish-swish!—new bubbles burst out like cheers.
Rook slowed, then twirled in a great circle above them, sending the bubble road everywhere at once. The fish copied him, and soon the whole reef fizzed with shared delight. Next time you see those bubbles around Rook and the fish, can you tell which ones are tiny drumbeats?
