Between the tank sheds and the stacked steel boxes, Juno kept one hand in her coat pocket and one on the signal tower door. The yardlight key was gone, and without it the evening switches would stay black. She could have waited for the foreman. Instead, when a tiny clink answered from beneath the freight platform, she stepped down into the oily smell of rails and warm dust.
Under the cars, something orange blinked. Not a lantern—a fox, thin as a shadow, with the brass key caught on its collar ring. “Hold still,” Juno whispered, though her knees tapped like loose couplers. The fox backed toward the open track. Juno took off her red scarf, laid it softly on the gravel, and lost three buttons crawling after it.
The fox sniffed the scarf, sneezed, and let Juno unhook the key. She carried it back with scratched palms and a secret she could hardly keep: the yard had small night workers too. Next time you spot the tower above the freight cars, remember the clink beneath it.
