Each morning before the mist lifted, Tarin tapped three notes with his claw on a hollow bamboo trunk, then listened for birds to answer from the ferny ridge. He wanted every dawn to begin as a chorus, bright and wide enough for the whole grove. But one morning, the bamboo gave only a dry tok, tok, tok, and every bird stayed silent. Even the insects seemed to hold their tiny glassy wings still.
Because of that, Tarin followed the hush instead of the path, nose low to the sweet, damp leaf mold. A soft warmth breathed from a pile of fallen branches where nobody bothered to look, not even the clever tree frogs. Because of that, he nudged aside a fan of leaves and found three eggs, freckled like river stones, humming with little knocks from inside.
At last, Tarin did not drum the bamboo. He curled his tail around the hidden nest and gave one low, gentle note. The birds answered, then the frogs, then the grasses rattled like rain, and the joy felt too big to keep under leaves. If you listen for three quiet knocks near the eggs, you may hear why every dawn in the grove begins with tok, tok, tok.
