🎨 How to color it

Color the cheerleader’s R sweater royal blue, her pleated skirt bright white with blue trim, the megaphone golden yellow, and the bleacher banners cherry red. Use sharp colored pencils for the many faces, pom-pom strands, and court floor lines so the small details stay crisp. Try making the biggest overhead banner fade from red at the corners to pale gold in the middle, as if gym lights are shining through it.

Under the buzzing gym lights, Emery rubbed a smudge of blue paint from her thumb and frowned at the blank cloth in her hands. The pep rally needed one big cheer banner, not another printed sign from the office, so she slipped out past the squeaking sneakers and followed a paper label that read STORAGE—DO NOT JIGGLE.

The door jiggled anyway. Inside, dust smelled like chalk and old popcorn. A tiny tap-tap-tap came from behind a stack of folded mats, where a gray-haired woman in a paint-spattered jacket was cutting stars from cardboard. “You found the banner room,” she whispered. “Every captain adds one handmade mark.” Emery traded her last silver hair ribbon for a bent stencil knife and learned how to press, trace, and cut until her fingers ached and the letter R curled cleanly from the cloth.

When she returned, the crowd had grown loud as thunder in a shoebox. Emery lifted the megaphone, held her new banner high, and felt proud of every uneven edge. “Ready?” she called. If you spot the big blank spaces above the bleachers, imagine which secret handmade mark Emery will add next under the buzzing gym lights.
