Every afternoon, Juniper raced along the orchard wall, trying to count twelve falling petals before even one kissed the dirt. The air smelled like green bark and rain-washed stone, and the petals whispered past her ears: flip, flick, flutter. She had only ever reached eleven.
Until one day, a warm gust snatched the twelfth petal sideways through a gap in the wall. Because of that, Juniper squeezed after it into the old bell grove, where branches crossed like ladders and the wind rang softly in empty bronze cups. Because of THAT, the petal spun higher, snagging on a cherry branch above a sleeping fox den.
Juniper’s knees buzzed, but she climbed. “Just one branch,” she whispered. At the top, the petal broke free, and she counted—ten, eleven, twelve—as it sailed down with a bright little whirl. Next time petals flip, flick, flutter across the page, can you find the brave twelfth one Juniper followed?
