Every evening, high in the observatory rafters, Zuri sorted brass stars into trays while the old Skywheel hummed over her head. She wanted to build one lantern of her own, with a sun on one side and a moon on the other, but the masters only let her sweep gold dust and tie ribbon tails. The air smelled of warm metal and candle smoke.
Until one day, the Skywheel coughed—clank, clank!—and every festival star froze. Because of that, Zuri climbed the creaking ladder with her half-made lantern hooked to her belt. Because of that, she spotted a tiny crank hidden inside a curled ribbon where no master had ever checked. “I made a handle that fits!” she shouted, pressing her carved wooden piece into place.
The wheel spun, ribbons whipped like comets, and Zuri’s lantern blazed sun-gold and moon-blue beside it. When the parade roared back to life, she grinned at the thing she had made with her own scraped-up hands. Next time you see the curling ribbon near the moon’s cheek, you might find the secret crank still turning.
