Between two fan corals, Zelly flicked her curled tail and launched a silver bubble. “Bubble Dash begins!” she called, tapping a shell on the rock: ting! The new game was simple—swim through the ring of rising bubbles before the smallest one popped. Around her, bright fish zipped like arrows, sea grass hissed in the current, and Zelly counted slowly, even when her fins buzzed to go faster.
She tried again and again. Big bubbles wobbled. Tiny bubbles vanished with soft pip sounds. Zelly waited for the next perfect chain to rise from the sand, because rushing made her miss the turn by the orange anemones. At last, five bubbles climbed in a curving path, neat as stepping-stones. Zelly darted, looped, dipped, and spun around the shell-dotted rock.
Then the rock answered: plink, plink, plink. Hidden snails opened their round little doors and sent up more bubbles in time with her tail taps. The whole reef had been listening to the rules. Zelly laughed, waited for their slowest bubble, and began the best round yet; next time you spot the tiny shells, can you tell which snail kept the beat: ting?
