Under the warm glass roof, Idris followed a tick-tick sound between sleeping pots. He wanted to know who was tapping after the watering cans went still. The Christmas cactus shivered on its bench, soft as a green ribbon, but no cricket hopped out.
Then Idris found a thumb-size drawer tucked under the saucer. Inside lay tiny charms, cool and smooth: a bell, a star, a deer, a tree. “Were you keeping these?” he whispered. The cactus opened one red flower, then another, as if answering yes.
