Under the cold pine boughs, Tavi tucked one claw around a snowy twig and invented Moonwink, a game with exactly three rules: blink at the moon, tap a pinecone, and say “who” as softly as falling flour. He had never sent his voice past his own feathers before. The woods smelled of sap and frost, and the pine needles went tick-tick whenever snow slid off them.
He tried a blink. He tried a tap. His “who” came out like a hiccup in a mitten. “That counts,” whispered a rabbit below, which made Tavi puff twice his size. Soon he added harder levels: wink left at a snowflake, wink right at a star, then tap-tap the branch without dropping the hat he had borrowed from the holiday basket.
Then the moon winked back. Not with an eye, exactly, but with a bright slide of light across every snowflake, and suddenly the whole forest was playing: pinecones bobbed, branches tapped, and the rabbit whispered “who” into a burrow like it was a secret password. Tavi’s next hoot came small, round, and real. If you ever spot an owl under winter branches, ask softly whether Moonwink has started yet.
