🎨 How to color it

Color the crossing guard’s vest bright safety orange, the stop sign classic red, the school warm yellow, and the two backpacks blue and purple. Use chunky crayons or markers for the wide vest stripes, crosswalk bars, and school walls, and don’t worry if little hands go past the bold lines. Add a sunny surprise by making the sidewalk squares alternate pale gray and light blue like a morning path to school.

Dax Builds the Brightest Stop — Every morning, Dax clicked his plain stop sign high and marched the crosswalk stripes: step, tap, smile! Read the full story →

Every morning, Dax clicked his plain stop sign high and marched the crosswalk stripes: step, tap, smile! He wanted to make a brighter sign with his own hands, one that drivers could spot through the loud rumble of buses and the smell of wet pavement.

Until one windy morning, the sign’s handle cracked with a snap. Because of that, Dax searched the school shed for tape. Because of THAT, he bumped an old orange cone, and shiny reflectors spilled from inside like tiny moons. “That’s where they were!” he laughed.

At his workbench, Dax stuck each reflector around a new wooden sign, press, press, press. Finally, he lifted it at the curb, and the cars stopped early. The kids cheered as they crossed. Can you spot the big sign Dax made for the crosswalk stripes: step, tap, smile?
