🎨 How to color it

Color the carpenter’s cap cherry red, his overalls denim blue, the birdhouse honey brown, and the two birds soft sky blue and golden yellow. The roof boards, fence pickets, tree bark, and tool handles have simple long shapes, so chunky crayons or broad marker strokes will fill them neatly. Try making the round birdhouse doorway a dark cozy brown, with a tiny warm yellow glow just inside.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Bird Doors Are Round — Under the leafy pear tree, tap-tap-tap went Felix’s hammer, but the little house still had no door. Read the full story →

Under the leafy pear tree, tap-tap-tap went Felix’s hammer, but the little house still had no door. In his pocket lay a bent silver nail from his dad’s old toolbox, smooth from years of rubbing. Felix wanted to finish before lunch, yet every square door he drew made the waiting wrens go cheep-cheep and hop away. “All right,” he whispered, like telling a secret. “I can wait.” The garden smelled like cut wood and warm grass.

A breeze rolled the bent nail across the workbench. It spun once, twice, and made a perfect circle in the sawdust. The shyest wren landed, tilted her head, and poked her beak right into the round mark. Felix sawed slowly around it, sanded the edge soft, and set the house high on its post. Ever since, birdhouses keep round doors, because one quiet carpenter waited for a wren to show him the shape—tap-tap-tap, under the leafy pear tree.
