🎨 How to color it

Color the electrician’s cap cherry red, the porch lantern golden yellow, the door deep teal, and the outlet panel a clean light gray. Use chunky crayons or broad marker strokes on the big siding boards, then switch to a sharper pencil for the tiny switches and tool shapes. Try making the lantern glow with a pale yellow circle around it, as if house number 42 has just lit up for evening.

Under the striped porch roof at number 42, Jovie snapped open her toolbox with a clank-clink and reached for her favorite screwdriver. She wanted the lantern to shine before the block’s evening parade of scooters, wagons, and barking dogs rolled by. The air smelled like warm wood and cut grass. “One bright click, coming up!” she sang, climbing the little stool while the glass panes winked in the sun.

The lantern cap turned, the wire curled neatly, and the bulb gave a happy ping. Then Jovie heard a tiny rattle from inside the empty lamp hook, a place nobody ever thought to check. Out slid a rolled paper, soft as a leaf: WELCOME, JOVIE—FIRST LIGHTKEEPER OF 42. The porch seemed to hum around her: mat, door, panel, toolbox, all in the right spots. When you spot the lantern above 42, imagine the warm wood, the cut grass, and one bright click coming up.
