🎨 How to color it

Give the inspector’s hard hat a safety yellow, the clipboard a warm tan, the house siding a soft blue-gray, and the roof shingles a charcoal gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the siding lines, window grids, ladder rungs, and tiny vent slats so the neat construction details stay crisp. Try adding a faint peach shadow where the inspector points, as if afternoon sun is catching that exact patch of wall.

By the narrow side yard, with cut grass tickling his ankles, Eli set his clipboard under one elbow and made a rule: he would count thirty tiny taps before snack. Tap on the siding. Scratch on the paper. Tap, scratch. The gutter smelled like rain and metal, and the ladder gave a soft clink whenever the breeze nudged it.

At tap twenty-seven, the wall answered: knock-knock. Eli froze, pencil in the air. He tapped once more. Knock-knock-knock came back, very polite and completely not in his plan. “No jokes until thirty,” he whispered, trying not to grin.

Then the basement vent fluttered, and a whiskered nose peeked from behind its little slats. A chipmunk had been drumming an acorn against the duct, copying every tap with excellent timing. Eli waited through three more acorn knocks, wrote “helper found,” and finally laughed so hard his hard hat wobbled. Next time you spot the vent below the wall, check whether the knock-knock champion is still hiding there.
