Every morning, before the bread truck honked, Keaton oiled the locks on his little key shop and listened for click-clicks as sweet as popcorn. He wanted every key on his ring to turn smoothly before breakfast. Until one windy morning, a tiny mail-cart mouse zipped from under a hedge, squeaking, “Door stuck! Soup getting cold!” The air smelled like rain on stone, and Keaton grabbed his toolbox with a clank.
Because of that, he raced past wet daisies to a quiet front stoop where three keys swung uselessly from the knob. Because of THAT, he found a bent pin jammed deep inside, while nobody peeked from the windows and the soup smell grew peppery. At last, Keaton slipped in his thinnest tool, tick-tick-twisted, and the lock popped open. He left the key turning easy, waved the mouse inside, and hurried home before the bread truck honked—listening for click-clicks as sweet as popcorn.
