🎨 How to color it

Color the firefighter’s helmet sunny yellow, the fire truck bright red, the brick station warm tan, and the big Station 1 signs bold black and white. The truck, door, and brick wall have roomy shapes, so use chunky crayons for the big fills and a sharper pencil for the letters and hose rings. Try making every number 1 match in gold, as if Station 1 has a secret sparkle.

Why Station One Waves — Before the bell rang, Bruno carried a wooden number 1 to the new brick firehouse. He had sanded it smooth with his own hands, and it smelled like pine dust and yellow paint. Read the full story →

Before the bell rang, Bruno carried a wooden number 1 to the new brick firehouse. He had sanded it smooth with his own hands, and it smelled like pine dust and yellow paint. He wanted it over the door before anyone arrived. Tap-tap came from the hose coil by the truck. A tiny soot-gray lizard poked out and whispered, “Not high. Put it where helpers can see.”

Bruno’s knees felt wobbly, but he lifted his number onto the firefighter’s helmet instead. When the crew opened the door, Captain Vale grinned and waved so wide his sleeve made a swish in the cool morning air. “Now everyone knows who answers first!” From that day on, Station One kept a waving firefighter by the door, and every helmet wore its proud first number. If you spot that shiny 1, you know Bruno’s pine-dust secret is still there before the bell rings.
