🎨 How to color it

Color the dragon deep emerald with bronze horns, make the lava rivers bright orange and yellow, and shade the crystal spires icy blue against a charcoal volcano. Use sharp colored pencils for the many scale plates, claw tips, cracked rocks, and wavy heat lines, saving broader marker strokes for the wings and lava channels. Try giving each wing membrane a smoky gradient from dark purple near the bones to pale gray at the edges, as if volcano steam is sliding over it.

Under the volcano’s hush-hush rumble, Rusk pressed both claws into warm clay and tried to shape a bridge tile that would not crack. He wanted one sturdy piece for his little heat bridge, the first thing he would build without asking the older dragons to fix it. The clay smelled like pennies and smoke. When the tile split—tck!—he tucked the pieces under his wing and crept off his safe basalt slab toward the shiny riverstone beds.

The ember flats hissed around his toes. Rusk gave up a clawful of cool drinking ash to harden the clay, and his throat went dry. Then a tiny lava salamander popped from a bubble, wearing a pebble like a hat. “Wrong stone, big paws,” she whispered. She led him to a black glass pebble that rang when tapped.

Back home, Rusk ground the pebble by hand, mixed it into the clay, and pressed fern marks along the edge with one careful talon. The new tile held. It was lumpy, striped, and entirely his. If you spot the cracked island, keep the secret: the first strong bridge began with Rusk pressing both claws into warm clay.
