🎨 How to color it

Color the dump truck construction yellow, the piled rocks slate gray, the quarry hills tan, and the far excavator orange. Use broad crayon or marker strokes on the big truck panels, then switch to a sharper pencil for the tire treads and rock cracks. Try making a few rocks speckled with brown and silver dots, as if the truck has uncovered a very glittery surprise.

Down in Rumblecut Quarry, Gus rolled along the dusty road with a bed full of stones going clunk-a-lunk, clunk-a-lunk. He liked the warm smell of dirt and diesel, and he liked backing up to the pit where the big rocks made the best THUDs. “Ready for the dump song?” Gus beeped, and his tailgate rattled like a tin drum.

Up went his bed, and out tumbled the rocks—bomp, bonk, bink! Then a tiny voice inside the pile squeaked, “Too slow! Add cymbals!” Out popped three echo mice wearing pebble hats, tapping shiny chips with their toes. They had not been hiding; they had been practicing for the quarry’s lunch bell band. Gus laughed so hard his headlights wiggled, then tipped one last stone for a perfect DONG. The mice bowed, the excavator hummed along, and Gus knew every clunk-a-lunk had brought him to the right stage. Can you spot where the giggle rocks might be waiting for their next bonk?
