Under the glass roof of the conservatory hall, Junia tucked a strip of ivory ribbon under one arm and set herself a dare: before the sixteen candle flames steadied, she would stamp sixteen rose seals along the party arch. Her shoes clicked over warm tile. Ferns brushed her sleeves with cool, wet fingers, and the air smelled of wax, leaf mold, and sugar icing waiting beyond the orange trees. She moved fast—press, lift, turn—each seal blooming in red on the ribbon.
The hall answered with motion. Vines curled around iron railings; paper lanterns shivered as guests hurried below with trays, violins, and bowls of sugared berries. Junia counted under her breath, “Thirteen, fourteen,” and leapt the little stream that ran through the center bed, laughing when one silver fish flashed like a tossed coin. The fifteenth rose landed beside a candle just as its wick gave a soft hiss.
For the sixteenth, she reached the highest loop of the arch and found no blank place left—only a tiny inked fingerprint, then another, hidden between the flowers. Every guest had pressed a thumb to the ribbon while passing underneath, leaving a garden of whorls. Junia grinned, planted her final rose in the middle, and unrolled the rest of the ribbon so the whole hall could add to it. By the time the flames steadied, her sixteen roses had become a border for everyone’s bright, rushing joy under the glass roof.
