Every morning, Nessa counted the peony buds before the archive gate opened, tapping each stem with her bamboo pencil while bees made their fussy little engine noises. She wanted a perfect tally, not because anyone asked, but because imperfect numbers tickled her brain like a leaf in the ear. One morning, the biggest bud sneezed pollen onto her nose and popped open just enough to show a folded scrap tucked inside.
Because of that, Nessa forgot the tally and fished out the note, which smelled of green tea and old mischief: CHECK THE PANDA. Because of that, she spent an undignified hour patting her own fur, ears, elbows, and feet while the sparrows laughed from the rafters. At last, she found a second note hidden in the soft hollow behind her left paw pad: STOP COUNTING. START WONDERING.
So Nessa wrote one new line in the ledger—“Bud count: suspicious”—and let the unopened flowers keep their secrets. By noon, curiosity had run off with the whole garden, and every stem seemed to tickle like a leaf in the ear.
