🎨 How to color it

Color the panda’s patches a soft charcoal, the starry backpack sky blue, the schoolhouse warm brick red, and the pencil sunny yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the backpack stars, window panes, bell, and tiny path stones, then switch to broader strokes for the school walls and open clouds. Try making the flag a red-to-orange sunrise gradient so it feels like the first morning of class.

The story behind this coloring page

Willa’s Bell-Tap Game — Before the first lesson, a panda cub named Willa wanted her new pencil to make a game no one had ever played. Read the full story →

Before the first lesson, a panda cub named Willa wanted her new pencil to make a game no one had ever played. She had carved three tiny notches into its yellow side with a shell, and each notch made a different tap: tik on the desk leg, tok on the door, tink on the brass bell rope hook. The schoolyard smelled like damp grass and apple skin, and the big bell above the doorway stayed silent as a closed eye.

Willa called her game Secret Steps. To win, she had to tap her pencil on three hidden places before the doors opened. Tik. Tok. But when she reached for tink, the carved pencil caught in the rope fibers and tugged them just enough. BONG! The sound rolled over the trees, shook a cloud, and sent every cub hurrying up the path.

The teacher found Willa holding her homemade pencil with both paws. Instead of scolding, she smiled at the three notches. “A sound that gathers everyone belongs to the school,” she said. Ever since, that hilltop bell has rung before every lesson, and if you spot the pencil in Willa’s paw, you may guess where the first tink began.
