Under the fern den, Tavi tapped bamboo stalks with one paw. Tok, tok, thunk. He wanted the crunchiest piece for supper, but every stalk near his cozy pile tasted soft and sleepy.
So Tavi rolled out past the tickly grass, sniffing the cool, green smell of cut bamboo. A sharp leaf scratched his ear, and he had to trade his favorite smooth stalk to a beetle who blocked the path. Then he heard it: hoo-hoo, from a plain old cane under the leaves. “Who’s there?” Tavi whispered.
Inside the hollow stalk was a curled bamboo note from the night wind: Save one bite for a secret song. Tavi carried it back, hungrier than before, and munched only half. The empty half whistled sweetly between his paws. Next time you see the crisscrossed bamboo under Tavi, can you guess which stalk learned to sing?
