🎨 How to color it

Give the panda’s black patches a soft charcoal, the karate uniform a crisp white with a scarlet belt, the bamboo stalks a fresh green, and the floorboards a warm honey brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow floor stripes and bamboo joints, then switch to broader strokes for the big uniform folds. Try a pale blue shadow under the lifted foot to make that high kick feel extra snappy.

Every afternoon, after the practice room smelled like polished wood and bamboo leaves, Dex tied his robe belt and arranged scrap floor slats into a game called Splinterboard Showdown. The rules were his own: kick the hanging cord, tap one board, hop over the striped square, and earn a clack from the bamboo scoreboard he had built with knots, pebbles, and a soup spoon.

Until one day, his best high kick snapped the cord too hard. The spoon rang CLANG, the pebbles jumped, and the scoreboard began counting by itself—clack-clack-clack—faster than Dex could hop. Because of that, the slats slid into silly new paths. Because of THAT, his left paw landed in the “bonus bog,” which was only a chalk circle but felt deeply insulting. “My game, my rules!” Dex huffed, grinning.

Finally, he grabbed the loose cord, tied it into a better knot, and added one new rule: if the scoreboard gets mischievous, the maker gets one fixing kick. His heel flashed up, the spoon gave one perfect ting, and every board settled straight. Dex bowed to his own invention, proud down to his fuzzy toes; next time you spot that raised paw, see if you can hear the first clack of Splinterboard Showdown.
