Before sunrise, Ren left the warm notch in the crystal bamboo stand to find one dawn shell, the small prism that caught first light for winter tea. Frost ticked on the canes like tiny spoons. Halfway through the angular leaves, a glass moth trembled against a split stalk, its wings too cold to open. Ren held the dawn shell over it until gold spilled across the moth’s veins; the prism dulled, and his paws stung with cold. No one saw the moth rise, or the pale beam it left cupped in Ren’s fur. He came home without the shell, carrying a softer sunrise than the one he had gone out to find.
