🎨 How to color it

Color the giraffe’s coat golden tan, its irregular spots chestnut brown, the leafy branch olive green, and the inner ears soft peach. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small face spots and eyelash lines, then switch to smoother strokes on the long neck and broad ears. Try making the leaves slightly different greens so the branch looks freshly snapped from a real tree.

Every morning, before the sun turned the dry riverbed white, Zuri tapped each stepping stone with a leafy branch and listened for the safe hollow clack. She wanted to lead the herd across just once, but the reeds hissed in the wind, and the hidden mud made even grown giraffes place their hooves slowly.

Until one day, the branch answered with a tiny jingle. Zuri froze, tasting dust and bitter leaves. Nobody looked inside chewed twigs for clues, but she cracked the bark with her teeth and found a little brass bell tied with grass. Because of that, the youngest calf heard the sound and followed close instead of wandering into the reed maze. Because of that, the bell kept ringing each time Zuri lifted her head, and the herd moved together, clack-jingle, clack-jingle, over the sneaky mud.

At the far bank, Zuri’s knees trembled so hard the leaves shook. “I’ll go first again,” she said, surprised by her own voice. The wind ran warm along her neck, and next time you see that branch by her mouth, listen for the safe hollow clack.
